Few plants evoke as much wonder as the amaryllis. From a seemingly simple bulb, a sturdy stem with spectacular flowers grows within a matter of weeks. It is precisely this remarkable development that makes the amaryllis a consumer favourite year after year. For it is not just the end result that is impressive: watching the plant grow and flower is an experience in itself.
From a simple bulb to spectacular blooms
The amaryllis, botanically known as Hippeastrum or ‘knight’s star’, originates from South America and South Africa. The bulbs grown in Europe today trace their roots to countries including Brazil, Peru and South Africa.
From there, the plant has become a true winter classic, loved for its striking presence and eye-catching flowers. According to Vreugdenhil Bulbs & Plants, the magic of the amaryllis lies above all in its ability to surprise people time and time again. It is no coincidence that the company markets its range under the Flora Magica label, a brand that revolves entirely around wonder, giving and receiving.
An amaryllis for every consumer
What makes the amaryllis so special is its enormous diversity. Whereas in the past mainly red and pink varieties were available, today’s range comprises a broad colour palette featuring white, pink, red and striped flowers.
There is also a wide choice in terms of flower shape. There are large-flowered, small-flowered, double-flowered, butterfly-shaped and multiflora types. This means there is a suitable variety for every interior style and every consumer.
Innovation in size and variety
As the market leader in both potted amaryllis and waxed amaryllis bulbs, Vreugdenhil remains strongly committed to innovation. The company produces a wide range, from compact mini-amaryllis in pot size 9 to impressive specimens with extra-large bulbs.
One of the most recent introductions is the XXL range in a 14 cm pot, allowing consumers to enjoy even more vigorous plants and more abundant flowering. The collaboration with Van Geest Amaryllis within VPB Breeding is also set to drive the development of new, unique varieties.

No Water Flowers®: flowering without water
One of the amaryllis’s great strengths is its ease of use. Virtually every amaryllis is suitable for growing in pots, but in recent years the plant has also enjoyed great success as a No Water Flower.
These waxed bulbs can flower without soil or water. It almost seems like magic, but behind the concept lies a careful selection process. After all, not every amaryllis variety performs equally well without water. That is why specifically suitable varieties are selected that have stored enough energy in the bulb to produce a beautiful bloom on their own.
“Behind the magic of a waxed amaryllis lies a meticulous selection process.”
A little more every day
It is precisely this growth process that makes the amaryllis so special for the consumer. Day after day, there is something new to discover: the stem getting longer, the buds slowly growing larger and, eventually, the impressive flowers unfolding.
The amaryllis is therefore much more than just a decorative plant. It is a little piece of nature that you can watch transform before your very eyes. A living decoration that continues to grow, bloom and surprise for weeks on end. At a time when consumers are increasingly looking for products with a story and an experience, the amaryllis fits the bill perfectly.
And afterwards? On to the next bloom
Even after flowering, the story need not be over. A potted amaryllis can, with the right care, be brought back into bloom. In this way, the plant offers not only a spectacular moment of beauty, but also a longer-lasting story that consumers are increasingly coming to appreciate.
The amaryllis proves that something spectacular can emerge from the simplest of forms. A bare bulb that grows before your very eyes into a stunning display of flowers: it never ceases to amaze. Whether it’s potted, presented as a waxed bulb or introduced as an exclusive new variety, the amaryllis brings a touch of magic into the home, just as the days start to get shorter.

How to enjoy your amaryllis for longer
Potted amaryllis
- Place the plant in a light, warm spot, but preferably not too close to the radiator.
- Water moderately and do not allow water to stand in the pot.
- Rotate the pot regularly so that the flower stems grow nice and straight.
- A slightly cooler spot whilst the plant is in bloom will help you enjoy the flowers for longer.
- Cut away spent flowers. With the right care, the bulb can flower again.
Waxed amaryllis – No Water Flower®
- No water required. The bulb contains enough energy to grow and flower on its own.
- Place it in a bright spot at room temperature.
- Avoid direct sunlight and strong heat sources.
- And above all: check on it regularly. You’ll see the flower grow almost day by day!
